How long is an ESA letter good for?
Federal law sets no expiration date. What landlords may ask for, why old letters cause trouble, and when renewing makes sense.
One thing no guide will tell you differently: registrations, certificates, ID cards, vests and "national ESA databases" carry no legal standing. The only document that supports a housing accommodation request is a letter written by a mental health professional licensed in your state after a genuine evaluation.
Quick answers to common ESA letter questions
Short answers live on our FAQ. Each link jumps straight to that category.
Browse by state
Housing accommodation rights come from federal law, but the path to a letter is not identical everywhere. Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana and Montana require a 30-day client–provider relationship before an ESA letter can be issued, your evaluation starts immediately and the letter is dated after day 30. California's rule comes from AB 468 (Health & Safety Code § 122318).
Our state pages set out the local rule, the fair housing agency that handles complaints where you live, and what to expect from landlords in that market. Every letter is written by a clinician licensed in your own state, that is what makes it verifiable.

Read enough? See if you qualify for an ESA letter
The assessment takes about five minutes. If a licensed clinician in your state agrees an emotional support animal is appropriate, your ESA housing letter is $99 and typically arrives within 24 to 48 hours of your evaluation.* A PSD letter is $139, both together are $199 instead of $238, save $39, and an annual renewal is $79. Additional pets on the same letter are $25 each.
