Emotional support animal vs psychiatric service dog
An emotional support animal helps you by being there. A psychiatric service dog helps you by doing something: interrupting a dissociative episode, applying deep pressure during a panic attack, waking you from a night terror, retrieving medication, or blocking space in a crowd. That trained task is the entire legal difference, and training is the handler's responsibility: no letter, ours included, turns a dog into a service dog on its own.
Which one you need is usually clear. If your animal's comfort is what you need, and you need it at home, an ESA letter for housing is the right document. If your dog is trained to perform a specific task for you and you need to bring that dog into shops, restaurants and aircraft cabins, you need a PSD letter, plus the airline's DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form. If you want both letters from one evaluation, the ESA + PSD combo is $199 instead of $238, so you save $39. Read the full ESA letter vs PSD letter guide.
