Who Qualifies for a PSD Letter?

You may qualify if a mental health condition substantially limits your daily life and a task-trained dog would help. Common conditions include:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma
  • Panic disorder and recurring panic attacks
  • Severe or generalized anxiety, including agoraphobia
  • Major depression and persistent depressive disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Autism spectrum conditions, schizophrenia and other conditions a task-trained dog can help mitigate

A PSD letter does not make a pet a service dog. Under the ADA your dog must be trained to perform a task related to your disability, and that training is your responsibility. If your dog is not task-trained yet, an ESA housing letter may fit better for now.

What Your PSD Letter Includes

Every PSD letter we issue includes:

  • The clinician's name, license number and state of licensure
  • Dated letterhead a landlord can verify
  • Your disability-related need for a psychiatric service dog, never your diagnosis
  • Fair Housing Act language for your home
  • Guidance on the DOT air-travel form

Psychiatric Service Dog Rights Under the ADA and DOT

A task-trained psychiatric service dog has the same rights as any other service dog:

  • Public access with a task-trained dogStores, restaurants, hotels, transit and other public places must admit your dog.
  • Businesses may ask only two questionsIs it a service animal required for a disability, and what task is it trained to perform?
  • No documentation can be demanded in publicStaff may not ask for a letter, ID card or vest, or about your diagnosis.
  • Airlines: fly in the cabin with the DOT formAirlines may ask for the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form. No pet fee applies.
  • Housing under the Fair Housing ActA trained dog is presumed reasonable under HUD's 2026 approach. Ask for pet fees and breed limits to be waived.

Tasks a Psychiatric Service Dog Can Be Trained to Perform

A psychiatric service dog performs a specific, trained task in response to your symptoms. Common examples:

Deep pressure therapy

Lying across your lap or chest to ease a panic attack.

Interrupting panic or dissociation

Nudging or pawing at the first signs of an episode.

Grounding and tactile stimulation

Leaning against you during flashbacks as a physical anchor.

Medication reminders

Alerting you at set times or fetching your medication.

Creating space in crowds

Keeping a buffer between you and strangers in crowds.

Waking from nightmares

Waking you from night terrors, common for handlers with PTSD.

There is no PSD certification to buy. You can train your dog yourself, hire a professional trainer or work with a nonprofit program.

ESA Letter vs PSD Letter

Both protect you at home. Only a PSD with a task-trained dog adds public access and in-cabin air travel; an ESA needs no training but covers housing only. See the full ESA letter vs PSD letter comparison.

PSD Letter FAQ

Does a PSD letter make my dog a service dog?

No, training does. The letter documents your need for a psychiatric service dog; under the ADA the dog must also be trained to perform a task related to your disability.

Can I fly with my psychiatric service dog?

Yes, in the cabin at no charge, if your dog is task-trained and well behaved. Airlines may ask you to complete the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form, and we help you with it.

Will my landlord accept a PSD letter?

Yes. Since May 2026, HUD presumes a housing request is reasonable when the dog is trained to do disability-related tasks, so a trained psychiatric service dog has the strongest footing in housing. Ask for pet deposits, pet rent and breed limits to be waived in your request. Your landlord may verify the clinician's license but shouldn't ask for your diagnosis.

What if the clinician doesn't approve me for a PSD letter?

You get a full refund. The clinician decides at their sole discretion whether a psychiatric service dog is right for you.
